More than 150 alumni and friends gathered for a World Cup watch party during the quarterfinal between Norway and England this summer. Held inside the American Dream mall near the MetLife Stadium, the event was intergenerational. “I met so many alumni and heard their stories and journeys,” said Elisa Charters ’92, ’93, co-vice chair of NJIT’s Board of Trustees. “There are a lot of new relationships being established because of this global event.”
The gathering was one component of a broader university response to the World Cup’s arrival in New Jersey. Across NJIT, students and faculty studied how fans moved through the region, built tools to understand and support the visitor experience, and designed ways for communities to create their own gathering spaces.
At the same time, NJIT used this rare global moment to promote the university in the region — and beyond.
