Biological Research In Action

Kristen Severi, assistant professor, biological sciences, examines transparent larval zebrafish in her lab. She studies how the brain and nervous system control behavior.


 

In 2023, 3,664 students contributed 64,616 hours at 214 nonprofit agencies, communities and schools.

Programs such as Alternative Spring Break and the Annual Day of Service connect NJIT to Newark and the rest of New Jersey.

Largest, most diverse first-year class ever

The U.S. Department of Education has designated NJIT as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and as an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander Serving-Institution (AANAPISI).


 

Diagnosing a River

Troubled by the decline of brown trout in the Pequannock, mechanical engineering major Taylor VanGrouw, now a junior, did research that identified temperature spikes in the river and proposed solutions.


 

Detecting Disease

Eon Soo Lee, associate professor mechanical and industrial engineering, is developing a nanoscale instrument that can help detect deadly diseases, such as ovarian cancer, early in their progression.


 

FEMME 

The Women in Engineering & Technology Initiatives program, commonly known as FEMME, runs for four weeks in the summer. It immerses girls in grades 4-10 in hands-on engineering projects.

Michael Johnson, Ph.D. became president of the New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII) in 2023. He founded the advanced cell culture and imaging contract research service business Visikol. An NJIT corporation, NJII was founded in 2014 and is a portal for university partnerships with corporations and funding agencies.

John Pelesko ’97, who earned a Ph.D. from NJIT in mathematical sciences, was appointed provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. Previously, he was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Delaware.


 

Baseball Finds New Home

NJIT and Montclair State University partnered to renovate Yogi Berra Stadium in Montclair, N.J. and create a shared home field for their baseball teams. NJIT competes in the NCAA Division I America East Conference.

Shark Science

Working with three other Black scientists, Ph.D. biology student Amani Webber-Schultz founded the nonprofit Minorities in Shark Science to boost diversity in the field; it has more than 400 members.

WEC Renaming 

NJIT celebrated the naming of the Joel & Diane Bloom Wellness and Events Center (WEC) in honor of NJIT President emeritus Joel S. Bloom and former NJIT First Lady Diane Bloom.


 

NJIT celebrated its largest graduating class, awarding more than 3,100 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at its 107th commencement across two days of celebration.


 

Mending the Mind

Donna Chen, a Ph.D. student in biomedical engineering, is interested in the cognitive impacts of spinal cord injuries. Part of her research involves scanning brains with functional near-infrared light while cognitive tasks are performed.


 

Battery Breakthrough 

Somenath Mitra, a distinguished professor of chemistry and environmental science, and Zhiqian Wang received a patent for a breakthrough in high-capacity, iodine-based batteries. They found that their batteries generate similar voltages as alkaline cells and can be made in different dimensions, including flexible, thin-film.


 

The Vincent A. Stabile Laboratory Wing for Systems Engineering and Management Program inside the Guttenberg Information Technologies Center building. The Stabile program is NCE’s flagship master’s level program emphasizing innovation, entrepreneurship and strong management skills.


 

Hillier College students from the Second Year Design Build Studio with a "parklet" they created on campus. The project was sponsored by Audible and the Project for Empty Space.


 

The Hillier College of Architecture and Design (HCAD) celebrated two important milestones – the 50th year anniversary of the New Jersey School of Architecture and the 15th anniversary of the School of Art & Design. In April 2023, four alumni were honored: Pamela Ospina ’18 Emerging Designer Award; Ken Colao ’77 Friend of the Hillier College Award; Robert Cozzarelli ’79 Distinguished Alumni in Leadership Award; Jak Inglese ’79, ’95 Distinguished Alumni Impact Award.
